The ideal gear depends entirely on your budget and experience, if you are just entering into bird photography, then as mentioned, try using second hand gear maybe try going for Nikon D7500 or Nikon D5600, if you are a canon lover, then would suggest to go for Canon 200D or Canon 1500D. Don’t get intimidated by people using high end gear and long lenses. It all comes down to how you make the best use of your passion and how you perceive your subject and how you capture the moment.

I personally started my journey with Nikon 90D DSLR camera, I explored all the various settings and started my bird photography journey with it. Then after 6 years I finally found confidence and brought Canon EOS R7, this camera was suitable for me with its fast autofocus and high-resolution sensor, and perfect for wildlife photography.

Lens:

• For bird photography, a telephoto lens is crucial. A 300mm / 600mm lens is ideal for capturing birds from a distance. Invest in a lens with image stabilization for sharp images.

• If you don’t want to invest in multiple lenses, them would highly recommend to go for 100–400mm lens. This lens will help you in clicking near by shots as well as long shots.

• A Fixed 300mm or 600mm lens will only capture subject at that range, and you might need to change your lens frequently.

Types of Bird Photography and How to Capture Them:

Perched Birds:

• Lens: Use a 300mm to 400mm lens.

• Settings: Set your camera to Aperture Priority mode with a wide aperture (f/4 to f/5.6) for a blurred background. Keep a fast shutter speed (1/500 or higher) to avoid motion blur.

Birds in Flight:

• Lens: A 500mm to 600mm lens is recommended.

• Settings: Switch to Shutter Priority mode with a fast shutter speed (1/1000 or higher) to freeze motion. Use continuous autofocus to track the moving bird.

Action Shots:

• Lens: Similar to birds in flight, a 500mm to 600mm lens works well.

• Settings: Opt for Shutter Priority with a fast shutter speed. Capture the dynamic moments of birds in action.
